Hello, I’m Riko, your tour leader and the founder of Deeply Regional Japan Tours. I am a geoscientist and environmental scientist by training, with personal research interests in the Japanese culture and prehistory, botany, ecosystems, traditional farming, fermented foods and garden design.  I have a Japanese multicultural background, having spent my formative years in Japan, Australia and Austria, and being based in Australia since 1980. In my free time, I enjoy the outdoors, photography, gardening, or simply dreaming. I believe in environmentally sustainable and healthy living, concepts that have been fundamental to the traditional Japanese culture since prehistoric times. I am passionate about introducing, to the outside world, the ‘real’ traditional culture and the beautiful landscapes of Japan.

Since 2015, we have been guiding private clients on unique, customised tours in regional Japan. In 2017, we launched our scheduled pre-packaged tour range, to cater for the growing number of people yearning for unconventional travel experiences in Japan. We look forward to guiding you through your special journey of discovery in ‘off the beaten track’ Japan.
